The camp of Sen. Manuel Villar, Jr. Wednesday dismissed as “irresponsible” the statement of Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III who earlier vowed not to impose new taxes should he be elected president.

“It is an irresponsible statement from someone who does not know what he is getting into. He (Aquino) is simply catering to the gallery,” Suplico said.

Suplico branded Aquino’s statement as “one of the most destructive words in the history of presidential politics.”

“A president needs funds to run the government. He can either raise taxes or rely on borrowings,” said Suplico, NP’s congressional candidate for Iloilo’s 5th district.
Last Thursday, Aquino told members of the Makati Business Club that he would not impose new taxes or even increase tax rates should he be elected president.

Aquino, Liberal Party standard bearer and archrival of Villar, also vowed to pursue rationalization of fiscal incentives as part of the efforts to plug revenue leaks and lower the budget deficit. But his critics noted that he offered no alternatives to boost government income without resorting to new taxes.

“Where will Aquino get the resources to address the financial crisis? The country needs additional revenue to keep it going,” Suplico said.

He said the senator could have been ill-advised knowing full well that the infamous electoral promise, which US President George Bush used in his presidential bid in 1988 backfired. Bush's broken promise was one of several factors that led to his reelection defeat in 1992, Suplico recalled.

“Noynoy has no originality. He copied the infamous electoral promise to project himself as an advocate of no new taxes unaware of the dire consequences of foregoing income opportunities that will benefit the people,” he said.

“Once again, Noynoy has exposed his relative inexperience, and this is a liability if he makes it to the high office,” added Suplico.

According to Suplico, most analysts believe that although tax is undesirable, it is sometimes a necessity in times of worsening budget deficit, a problem the next president of the Philippines will have to deal with

  1. increasing tax is not necessary. government is money maker not really a public servant or protecting people. for example increase fee of nbi clearance, and other services of government na hindi makatarungan para itaas. tumataas ang lahat ng presyo and that's not the expectation for many. i'm sure ang pagbaba ng mga bilihin ang gusto ng lahat at hindi ang tumaas ang lahat ng bilihin at kung anupaman. the word government is to govern, para pagandahin at paunlarin ang nasasakupan, para alisin ang kahirapan at hindi pahirapin ang nasasakupan.
