The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday stood pat in its decision to grant accreditation to the coalition of the Nacionalista Party (NP) and the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NCP) in spite the NPC’s failure to meet the deadline for registration of political parties.
“That provision refers to groups that are not yet registered as parties. The NP registered even before you were born. And NPC has been long time registered. So, these are registered organizations. They do not come under that provision, which gives deadline,” said Comelec Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer.
Ferrer, who heads the poll body second division, issued the statement as the Comelec came under fire for its approval of the NP-NPC coalition.
The coalition was reportedly formed only last January 28, or six months after the deadline for registration of political parties lapsed but the poll body took exemption for such reason.
Early this week, the poll body — with dissenting opinion from Comelec Chairman Jose Melo and Commissioner Rene Sarmiento — gave merit to the petition for accreditation of NP and NPC coalition.
An en banc resolution said the Liberal Party (LP), which is opposing the coalition, was not able to present viable merit for the commission to deny their rival accreditation.
In a separate media briefing, Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez doused speculations that they were “biased” when the poll body ruled in favor of the NP-NPC coalition.
"The Comelec is not biased and how can a decision involving a different political party be automatically considered as a bias against someone else," he said.
