SUBIC, Zambales: Sincerity, not the number of television advertisements and celebrity endorsers, will help a candidate win the presidency, former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada said here over the weekend. Apparently taking potshots at survey frontrunners Sen. Benigno ”Noynoy” Aquino 3rd and Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar Jr., Estrada added that people will eventually see the real motives behind every candidate’s decision to run in the 2010 elections as the balloting draws nearer.

“Sincerity. No matter how many ads you put on television or how many actors and actresses support you, if you are not really sincere with your motives, the people will see through you,” the former leader said.

According to Estrada, also a former movie star, he was able to pull his survey ratings up by 6 percent in three weeks because he was sincere.

He said that the people cannot be fooled as to who among the candidates is really for the poor and who is for the poor only during election time.

“Hindi niyo maloloko ang taong-bayan. Gutom ang masang Pilipino pero lalo silang gutom sa katotohanan [You cannot fool the people. The Filipino masses are hungry but they are hungrier for the truth],” Estrada added.

He said that his campaign for the presidency in the May 10 elections is highlighting the fact that only the Erap camp is the true opposition camp. Estrada is running again for the highest post in the land that according to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, is “destined” to be won by the former president.

“The Aquinos played a great role in the unconstitutional ouster dubbed as Edsa Dos and Sen. Villar was responsible for railroading the impeachment trial. They are the ones responsible for putting [the Arroyo administration] in power, so they cannot claim that they are truly members of the opposition. They are only members of the opposition when convenient,” Estrada said.

Accused of massive coruption less than three years into his six-year presidency, he was ousted in 2001 in a popular uprising, one of whose main supporters was, former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino.

Cory’s only son, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd is leading the surveys, with Estrada either at the third or fourth spot, on preferred president.

Cory died of cancer last year but much earlier had reconciled with Estrada.

Then House Speaker Villar caused the hastening of the impeachment trial in the Senate by literally putting one over the Estrada camp during a supposedly routine hearing.
