Nuclear energy to solve energy crisis—Marcos son

MANILA, Philippines – Ilocos Norte Representative Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. is urging government to reexamine the feasibility of recommissioning the Bataan Nuclear Energy Plant amid continued energy crisis in Mindanao and now recently in Luzon.

The mothballed BNPP can generate at least 600 megawatts "enough to energize Luzon," said Marcos in his visit to Bandera office Saturday.

He said the shutting down of the BNPP when the Aquino administration took charge in 1986 was a “political decision” and “there was no scientific or technical bases made.”

“Maybe this is about time for us to reexamine the feasibility of putting it on line," said Marcos, son and namesake of the late strongman under whose term the BNPP was constructed.

Marcos, who is running for senator under the Nacionalista Party, also opposed giving special energys to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, saying this will not lead to a solution to the energy crisis.

"Let’s not fall into the same trap that we fell into last time," Marcos said, referring to special energys granted by the Congress to ex-president Fidel Ramos during the energy crisis in the 90s.

"The financial arrangements that were made were onerous to the government that we are still paying up to now.... that's our last experience with emergency energy during a energy crisis," Marcos said.

Ramos entered into a number of negotiated contracts which later translated into high cost of electricity, said Marcos.

"So you cannot blame us for being worried that if in this energy crisis that we grant emergency energy and we end up with the same situation, because that's not a good situation to be," he said.

Besides, there is no easy solution to this, and that emergency energy which is seen by others as the easiest way to deal with the problem would not solve it, he said.

"Wala namang magagawa ang emergency energy. Pag nabigyan ba siya ng emergency energy, ano pauulanin nya? magkakaroon tayo ng tubig bigla [The emergency energys cannot do anything. If she’s given emergency energys, will she let the rain fall? Will we have water all of a sudden]? Marcos added.
