IN-between sobs, Curita Bamba Villar told reporters yesterday how, as a mother, she suffers when hearing criticisms, especially the vicious kind, against her son, Sen. Manny Villar.

The 86-year-old "Nanay Curing" is now paralytic and blinded.

In a press conference held at her house in Vista Grande, BF Resort in Las Piñas City, Nanay Curing said "it pains me and it almost cost my life" hearing the lies being peddled by Villar critics, especially those questioning his roots.

Clad in an orange duster, Nanay Curing started the media interview very calmly as she even managed to narrate how hard their life had been in Tondo.

"Kung ayaw niyo maniwala pumunta kayo sa Divisoria market, Stall 2245," she said.

She said she had been silent amid the criticisms but finally decided to talk because "aping-api na ang anak ko. Nasasaktan ang mga kapatid niya."

One of Villar’s sisters, Gloria Benedicto, briefly stopped the press conference when her mother became hysterical.

Gloria and siblings Lourdes and Vicky said their mother’s surfacing was not a publicity stunt. Vicky said their mother has been crying every night. "Ayaw namin na umiiyak siya, kasi din bulag siya since July," she said.

Vicky and Gloria denied organizing the press conference, saying they were surprised that journalists showed up at their house. They added that Villar did not know that their mother spoke at a press conference.

Villar’s media staff invited the media to the press conference set at 10 a.m.

While another sister was being interviewed after the press conference, Benedicto lost her temper when a reporter asked the reason for the press conference, saying this might be misconstrued as Villar using his mother.

Apparently referring to Sen. Benigno Aquino III, she said: "Sino bang hindi gumagamit ng nanay? Eh patay na nga ang nanay nila ginagamit pa nila. Mabuti pa kami buhay pa yung nanay, kaya pang ipagtanggol ang anak."

Benedicto also criticized television networks ABS-CBN, GMA7, and other media companies for allegedly being unfair to her brother.

"Masyado kayong unfair, you media people, you are unfair. Yang si (Arnold) Clavio (of GMA 7) na yan, si (Winnie) Monsod (also of GMA 7) na yan. My God, di nila kami kilala para sabihan na yan," she said.

GMA 7 released a report yesterday on Villar’s claim of having come from a poor family. Based on what it said was its research, GMA 7 concluded the Villar family was from the middle class , with Villar Sr. in 1961 earning a monthly income of what is now equivalent to P35,000.

Nanay Curing appealed to the public to give Villar a chance to serve the people. "Pakiusap ko lang, maniwala kayo sa kanya … Maawa po kayo sa anak ko," she said.
