MalacaƱang once again made an assurance that the May 10 elections will proceed and that Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro will remain the administration candidate for president in next month’s polls.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Press Undersecretary Rogelio Peyuan said that the Lakas-Kampi CMD remains committed to the candidacy of Teodoro and it will continue to support him until the elections.

Peyuan brushed off allegations that say President Arroyo only uses Teodoro for her own political survival. “The Arroyo administration remains committed to the Lakas-Kampi CMD and everything will remain unchanged with regard to the presidential bet it supports,” he said. “And, I suppose that until the elections, Gilbert Teodoro will be Lakas-Kampi CMD’s presidential bet.”

At the same time, Peyuan made an assurance that despite the ongoing political noise, the May 10 balloting will take place.

“We want to assure the people, and they should believe it that there will be elections this May 10 and the President will step down from power on June 30. The people will witness the assumption of the new president of the country,” he said.

Peyuan also commented on the reported P700-million scam at the Commission on Elections (Comelec), saying that the Palace believes that the poll body could handle the controversy well and it could eventually come up with the truth.

According to him, he did not believe that the reported scam in the purchase of ballot secrecy folders could add weight to speculations on failure of next month’s elections.

“Well, I don’t think it has anything to do with a possible scenario on failure of elections. This is a regular mandate of the Commission on Elections. I suppose that things that have been transpiring at the Comelec are all transparent,” he said.

“So I suppose that the Commission on Elections is also observing the very Republic Act or the laws that govern bids and awards and the public must not be wary at all that there will be any problem or that it will be an instrument just to justify a failure of elections,” Peyuan added.

He said that he was sure the Comelec is doing its constitutional mandate to ensure honest and peaceful polls this May.
