Digging one’s own grave

A new tack taken by Liberal Party (LP) candidate Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino to steer clear of debates is a clear proof of his lack of mettle to handle the rigors of the presidency.

What made it worse was Aquino’s quip that instead of engaging in debates, he would rather concentrate on “finding lapses in governance.”

The problem with this is the fact that the time these lapses in Gloria’s governance should have been pointed out would have been from the day she grabbed power. And there were many, but neither Noynoy nor his Liberal Party ever “concentrated” on her lapses, such as the Impsa $14 million kickback, even when documented evidence was presented. Did we hear even a pip from Noynoy or the LP when all these “lapses” were exposed?

What about her having bribed the congressmen not to have her impeached. Why then didn’t this arrogant and ignorant Noynoy not come forth to denounce her then?

Why should they? For one Noynoy wasn’t even seen by the LPs as even senatorial material, much less presidential material.

And he and the LPs were all too protective of her then, being her allies.

Now, with less than six months to go in her presidency, Noynoy and his LP say they will be concentrating on finding Gloria’s lapses in governance?

That takes the cake for Aquino’s periodic self immolation.

Aquino has lately been the cause of his own downfall as evidenced by his quickly slipping preference on presidential surveys.

It seems that everytime he talks, he squanders political support.

Just the other day, the Aquino camp made an irrational demand for the disqualification of a candidate Vitallano Acosta because it will dislodge Aquino from the premiere spot on the Commission on Elections

The argument presented by the camp of Aquino in questioning the Comelec’s decision to include Acosta on the presidential list was out of this world.

Acosta, a Kilusan ng Bagong Lipunan (KBL) bet and a virtual unknown, was qualified by the Comelec to contest the presidency.

While the Comelec has shown total inconsistency in deciding who is a nuisance bet and who is not, the camp of Aquino questioned the decision on Acosta, not on the merit of his qualification but on the fact that he is being inserted supposedly to sabotage Aquino’s candidacy by taking away votes from him.

And based on their paranoid argument, Acosta would rob Aquino of votes because Noynoy would be dislodged from the top slot on the candidates’ list in the ballot.

While there were instances in past elections when unknowns were fielded to sabotage the votes of strong candidates frequently through namesakes, it is patently unclear how in the case of Acosta, would Aquino’s vote be affected as a result of a slight change in Aquino’s position in the alphabetical order of more or less 10 presidential candidates.

It would be a sheer insult on the capability of Filipino voters not to distinguish between Acosta and Aquino when it comes to the automatic polling in May, for one.

Also it seems to put a cloud of doubt on the supposed acceptability of Aquino among voters as a result of the line of argument given against the Comelec’s decision on Acosta.

Aquino’s campaign pitch is that he is the most valid alternative to the abusive and corrupt administration of President Arroyo, which is incomprehensible when Noynoy’s backers are conceding the possibility that voters may mistake him with Acosta.

The wild swings from the Aquino camp along with the wild swings of Noynoy, in turn, prove that the Liberal Party candidate lacks the quality to lead the nation out of the nine-year slump created by Gloria.

Instead, Noynoy has shown, thus far, his capability to drag the nation into a deeper abyss.
