Truth meter

from FRONTLINE by Ninez Cacho-Olivarez (The Daily Tribune)

Survey frontrunners are at each other’s throats in their attempt at projecting themselves as oppositionists — in relation to Gloria Arroyo and her administration.

Liberal Party standard bearer, Noynoy Aquino, charged that Nacionalista Party presidential candidate Manny Villar was never in opposition to Gloria, and never attacked her, while Villar says that, apart from Aquino not having any legislative record of note, and no administrative or executive experience, he and his LP were close allies of the administration, while the Nacionalista members were in the forefront of the first impeachment proceedings against Gloria.

If the truth meter were out, it would show that both Aquino and Villar were enjoying themselves in bed with Gloria and her administration. And both were against the Estrada government, from the year 2000.

Both the Liberal Party and the Nacionalista Party and their leaders supported Gloria in her coup d’etat against Estrada, showing their complete disregard for the Constitution and its democratic processes.

Both Aquino and Villar supported Gloria Arroyo in 2004, and even when they knew that she had cheated to win the presidency, they continued to support her and her administration.

And as they were allies of Gloria then, they enjoyed all the perks and privileges of being a Malacañang ally.

Neither one ever attacked Gloria or her policies.
It is on record that even as the “Hello Garci” tape came out, LP’s Franklin Drilon did propose to Gloria to have Malacañang in Iloilo, because they love her there. It is also true that Villar was not into actively impeaching Gloria in 2005, even as it is being claimed that the Nacionalistas were at the forefront of the impeachment game against Gloria.

The fact is that there was no solid Nacionalista Party then. Villar had not yet bought the political franchise from Doy Laurel, nor was he as yet its president. At that time, both were with the administration coalition and were steadfast allies of Gloria.

There was a minority bloc led by then Rep. Francis “Chiz” Escudero. He was at the forefront of the impeachment case against Gloria. One never heard a pip from either Villar or Noynoy.

The truth is, the LP Drilon bloc only went against Gloria after the so-called Hyatt 10’s “constitutional coup” plot against Gloria failed.

The coup plot consisted of a plan to get a majority of Gloria’s Cabinet to declare her unfit to discharge her functions as president, getting the Vice President to take her place as acting president. This was the reason for the simultaneous call of Cory Aquino for Gloria to resign, and the LP Drilon bloc to hold a press conference, following the announced resignation of the Hyatt 10, as the LP bloc demanded that Gloria resign.

But the coup failed, and they had no choice but to now be in opposition to Gloria in 2005. But even then, the LPs were said not to have pushed the first impeachment complaint against Gloria. And where was Noynoy in all this? Why wasn’t he denouncing the abuses of Gloria, as he claims abuses should be denounced, even as his LP bloc parted ways with Gloria?

Neither Villar nor Noynoy was planning that far ahead to run for the presidency in 2010, that’s why they were playing it safe with the Gloria administration.

Naturally, as the 2007 election neared, they had to join up with the Estrada opposition, with these hypocritical civil socialites lobbying with Estrada to get their candidates included in the Genuine Opposition Senate slate.

In all that time in the House of Representatives and the Senate, Noynoy did nothing spectacular, by way of either showing leadership and good governance nor even denounced abuses through investigations or legislative measures, despite his having headed so many committees in Congress.

But guess who are surrounding both Noynoy and Villar?

The same persons and groups that supported Gloria.

Truth meter: Both are lying through their teeth.
