Inquirer debate at UP: 81 pointed questions, answers

by John Nery (Philippine Daily Inquirer)
A GILBERT TEODORO SUPPORTER has wagered that Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III won’t show up for Monday’s first Inquirer presidential debate in 25 years.

The debate will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, at the UP Theater at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. It is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

“Basta pustahan tayo wala si Noynoy dyan haha (Let’s bet Noynoy won’t show up there),” IlDuce writes in the comment thread titled “The toughest presidential debate yet: The Inquirer presidential debate,” in the online PinoyExchange forum.

IlDuce would have lost because Noynoy, in fact, has accepted the invitation and reconfirmed his attendance.

Aside from Teodoro and Aquino, other presidential candidates, including a survey-resurgent Sen. Manny Villar, have already reconfirmed. (Only one of the nine invited candidates remains uncommitted as of press time.)
Yacarob (a long-time member of the very popular PinoyExchange) was the first to leave a comment in the thread that forum moderators had started. A thread is a log of comments on any subject posted online.

“I’m looking forward to this presidential debate,” the member wrote. “Hoping for a FAIR affair on Monday!”

After a few minutes, Seraphic Vision replied (quote exactly as written): “basta hwag lang si ted failon ang moderate (As long as Ted Failon is not the moderator)!”

Not 1 but 3 moderators

Seraphic Vision was probably referring to the last presidential debate at the De La Salle University-Manila, where ABS-CBN news anchor Ted Failon served as moderator. Failon has been criticized in some quarters for an apparently inconstant neutrality.

Instead of one moderator, “Inquirer 1st Edition: The Presidential Debate” will have three. Former UP College of Law dean Raul Pangalangan will moderate the law and politics panel; columnist Rina Jimenez David will handle the social issues panel; and former economic planning secretary Cielito Habito will facilitate the economics and budget panel.

Estrada to reconfirm

Villar, Aquino and Teodoro will be joined by Councilor JC de los Reyes, Sen. Richard Gordon, Sen. Jamby Madrigal, Mr. Nicky Perlas and Bro. Eddie Villanueva.

Former President Joseph Estrada, the first to confirm among all candidates, has yet to reconfirm as of press time, apparently on the advice of campaign manager Ernesto Maceda.

Some 2,000 tickets have already been distributed, through the Inquirer’s forum partners, such as the UP College of Mass Communication, the Management Association of the Philippines and the Philippine Nursing Association.

Also as of press time, a pair of tickets has been reserved for each of the 98 Inquirer readers who sent in intriguing or well-phrased or original questions. At least six of these questions, to be chosen by the panelists themselves, will be raised during the debate.

Justice for Gordon

Krayon, a PinoyExchange member since 2005, used the debate thread to lambaste mass media for failing to do justice to other candidates, especially Gordon. “Gordon will kill, yet again,” the member wrote. “Seriously, I am pissed that the media hasn’t really acknowledged this.”

Guccietro, a self-proclaimed “socialite” who wittily described her location as “Beside Forbes,” immediately agreed. “I think media reckons he belongs to the ‘sure losers category’ together with JC, Brother Eddie, not worthy of their print space or airtime. This sucks.”

A new forum member using the common handle Imho (Internet-speak for “in my humble opinion”) pursued Guccietro’s argument. “They don’t like Gordon because he’s smart and he can influence the Filipino people [and make them realize] how they are taken for granted by their leaders and manipulated by the media.”

Member s_lo75 wanted to know, “Will Noynoy attend?” That gave IlDuce the opening to say “Basta pustahan tayo wala si Noynoy dyan haha
(Let’s bet Noynoy will not be there. Haha).”

Probing questions

Depraved Monk, like IlDuce a forum member only since December, offered unsolicited political advice. “Noynoy must attend this debate or he’ll be branded by Villar camp as [a] coward,” Depraved Monk said.

“I have always insisted that Noynoy abandon his so-called ‘meek’ nature. If he doesn’t step up, his survey ratings will never go up [again]. That means even if he loses the election he can’t even summon people power because the survey ratings don’t justify it,” Depraved Monk added.

Aquino debating Teodoro

Another new member with the appropriately false name Fauxx aired his hopes in a mix of English and Tagalog. “Anyway, I want Gibo, Villar and Gordon to debate. Any of them can win. (And I’m okay with that.)”

To which Depraved Monk immediately answered: “But I still want to see Noynoy debate with Gibo, Villar and Gordon.”

AbulugAdventure, a member of long standing (since 2002, an entire generation in Internet years), made a simple, seemingly contrary wish. “I would prefer Q & A [rather] than debates.”

With the Inquirer presidential debate, she may just get her wish. The forum’s uncommon format features a total of 81 opportunities, over a little over two hours, for probing questions and pointed answers.

  1. Please don't vote senators who acquired real estates in United States like Tito Sotto III who bought an expensive house in upscale area of San Jose,California and sold it later for $1.2 million after it was exposed in the media. But 2 years ago he bought another house in another upscale area of Las Vegas,Nevada.Patalsikin ang mga taksil sa bayan.
