DAVAO CITY — The heavy rains failed to dampen the mood of ardent supporters of presidential candidate Sen. Manuel Villar, Jr. who trooped to the Nacionalista Party’s “Rockatropa" concert rally held at an open football field here.
They were ready with their umbrellas the minute the rain poured down heavily. Instead of dispersing, the crowd, an estimated 120,000, stayed put and endured a “wet and wild” concert at the Tionco Football Field.
The crowd shrieked, screamed and even gamely danced when celebrity host Willie Revillame started his “Giling-giling” and “Chuchurot” intermission number.
Singer-host Randy Santiago said the rain is “a sign of blessing” for Villar and his NP ticket.
Villar’s running mate NP vice presidential candidate Sen. Loren Legarda was also present during the rally.
World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, a known staunch ally of Villar, also graced the concert.
In a press conference at the Davao City International Airport, Villar told local and national reporters that he is confident of raking up support from local officials in Davao.
He said this while fully aware that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is backing the presidential bid of Liberal Party’s Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Villar said he has the support of governors Arturo “Chiongkee” Uy of Compostela Valley, Roberto del Rosario of Davao del Norte, Corazon Malanyaon of Davao Oriental, Douglas Cagas of Davao del Sur, and members of the House of Representatives from these provinces.
He also said he aims to strengthen his base within local officials in Mindanao.
Villar added that he sees nothing wrong with Vice President Noli De Castro’s throwing his support to Liberal Party vice presidential candidate Sen. Manuel Roxas II.
The senator said he “fully understands” the attitude of De Castro towards his running mate, Sen. Loren Legarda.
Legarda ran against De Castro in the May, 2004 national elections. She lost in the vice presidential race, but filed a protest.
Villar was a member of the Senate’s so-called Wednesday group where he and De Castro were once part, including Senator Joker Arroyo and former senator Ralph Recto.
