MANILA, Philippines - The nationwide political machinery of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD will deliver at least 15 million votes to party standard-bearer Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr., Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Jr. said yesterday.
“It is our machinery that will carry Gibo to victory,” he told the Serye Café news forum in Quezon City.
Barzaga said of the country’s 1,500 town mayors, 1,200 are affiliated with Lakas-Kampi.
“If each of them delivers just 10,000 votes to Gibo, he will have 12 million votes from municipal mayors. We have 66 city mayors. If they can each deliver an additional 50,000, that’s more than three million more for a total of 15 million votes, enough to make Gibo our next president,” he said.
He said in Cavite, which has a voting population of 1.7 million, he and other Lakas leaders would give Teodoro no fewer than half a million votes.
Lakas-Kampi senatorial candidate Raul Lambino shared Barzaga’s prediction that their candidate would win despite his poor survey showing.
“Northern Luzon, from the Ilocos provinces to Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and most of the Visayas and Mindanao will go for Gibo. In Metro Manila and Southern Luzon, including Bicol, he will put up a good fight,” he said.
Barzaga and Lambino also said money is now flowing from their party to its candidates and local leaders.
“In Cavite, we have funds coming from the party to our congressional and local candidates,” Barzaga said.
Lambino, who had complained of lack of financial support from Lakas-Kampi, said he now has television advertisements, proof that funds have been unlocked.
“We are now happy, we can now afford to campaign as a team more frequently,” he said, grinning from ear to ear.
At the same time, Barzaga chided some of his administration party colleagues for deserting Teodoro and defecting to the camps of his opponents.
“We have a moral obligation to support him. Gibo did not impose himself on us. We Lakas-Kampi members chose him in a convention as our presidential candidate,” he said.
“Besides, we are setting a bad example to our young leaders by changing political colors,” he said.
He vowed to support Teo-doro “all the way.”
In another development, Teodoro called on his rivals not to give false hopes and band-aid solutions to voters in their effort to win the elections.
“The major problems of the country are so deep-rooted that it would take long-term solutions and hard, often unpopular, decisions to solve them. Also, economic, political and environmentally sustainable development takes time,” Teodoro said.
He said candidates should not promise the immediate lowering of prices of commodities because it takes time and clear-cut plans to make these happen.
On addressing the country’s energy woes, Teodoro said implementation of the sustainable and renewable energy roadmap and encouraging investors to invest in generating capacity is the key.
“But can these immediately lower the price of energy? No it will not. But the prices will go down in the near future, which will not happen if we don’t enter into such deals right now. So let us not deceive our countrymen into believing that we can lower the prices of energy. It would be hard for us to lower this unless there is a reduction in oil prices,” Teodoro pointed out. – With Jaime Laude
