Officials of the admi-nistration party, Lakas-Kampi-CMD, yesterday assailed the country’s major survey companies as it has come to their knowledge that these firms have themselves elicited the idea to the public that the battle for the presidency has been narrowed down to the two leading candidates, hence the frequent favorable results on the part of the candidates concerned.
Speaking before a Malacañang press
conference, ruling party’s secretary general, Raymond Roquero, challenged the owners of the survey firms in question to come out in the open and declare which candidates are they supporting and just how much do their companies receive from them.
“They (survey firms) should tell us who their benefactors are, how much do they receive from them to conduct these surveys and one presidential candidate even mentioned that it is time to refrain from publishing the results (in favor of them) because this gives the wrong impression to our people,” he said.
Roquero also stressed that despite the questionable survey results every now and then, nothing changed in their belief that their candidate, former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, would have a come-from-behind win especially since the dirty campaign tricks established by other quarters have backfired.
“There is such a thing as a come from behind victory and what we’re seeing now is that the efforts of our candidates have been galvanized. The black propagandas being waged against us by the opposition seemed to have backfired and went to our favor. We have seen unheard of groups now helping us in the province,” Roquero said.
He added that Teodoro’s chances in winning the presidential race are also strengthened by the recent reaffirmation of support by their allies at the local level particularly those of the 56 provincial governors and hundreds of congressmen.
Presidential adviser for political affairs and concurrent vice chairman for recruitment and membership of Lakas-Kampi CMD, Prospero Pichay echoed that the continuous mudslinging by the two leading rivals for the top public position spurred an increase in the number of undecided voters which they would like to capitalize from.
“With the machinery that we have, I’m sure we will be able to convert the undecided which is around 20 percent plus the 8 or 9 percent of Gilbert Teodoro, maybe 10 in the next survey, and that will assure us of victory in 2010,” Pichay said.
He added they are still not discounting the fact that defections may still occur but they’re confident that this anticipation will not exceed to 10 percent as they have since expected.
“Considering the fact that we have 161 candidates for congressmen and congresswomen and then we have around 72 candidates for governors and, of course, a lot of mayors and city mayors — you can expect that there will be more defections but not big enough to be able to tilt the balance,” Pichay said.
