STA ROSA, Laguna – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo can take care of herself, said Senator Manny Villar in response to persistent talk that he was the President’s secret candidate.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Villar reiterated that he was not Arroyo’s secret candidate.

In fact, if he gets elected president in May, Villar promised not to lift a finger to defend Arroyo from any future criminal cases that may be filed against her.

“As far as I’m concerned, our justice system is there. If there is anyone who will file a case against the President, I will not interfere. Let justice take its course. And if she will be found guilty, then they should be punished,” said Villar in Filipino.
“Mayroon tayong judiciary at hindi po tayo makikialam diyan. Maraming magdedemanda sa Pangulo hindi po natin ipagtatanggol ang Pangulo. Bahala po siya sa kanyang sarili [We have a judiciary and we won’t interfere. There will be a lot of cases against the President and will not defend her. She can take care of herself],” he said.

Villar believed that he had fully explained himself on the matter, when he repeatedly stated in various media interviews that he had not met with the President or her husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo, since he was ousted from the Senate presidency.

“Wala na, nasabi ko na lahat ng dapat sabihin. Sinasabi ko na nga ni hindi pa nga kami nagkikita e [No more, I have said all that I want to say. I am telling you that I haven’t seen her],” he said.

“I think they are the secret candidate that is why they are trying to pin it on me. There is a possibility because they have a lot of relatives [in government] this is why it’s possible that they are the secret candidate,” he said in Filipino.

And while Villar did not name names, he was apparently referring to his rival, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Villar also dismissed attacks by another rival, Senator Ma. Ana “Jamby” Madrigal, whose latest tirade was at his wife, Las Pinas Representative Cynthia Villar.

Madrigal said Mrs. Villar was “the brains and the brawn” behind the senator and electing him would mean a “conjugal dictatorship” for Filipinos.

Instead of hitting back at his attacker, Villar only wished happiness for Madrigal.

“What I can advise her is that I will refer her to my barber since she linkes my hair,” he said in jest.

Madrigal, in the first presidential debate by the Philippine Daily Inquirer Monday, pointed to Villar’s hair as the only good thing that she could say about the fellow senator.

Madrigal and Villar have been at odds since the former accused him of corruption for allegedly using his position to profit from the allegedly anomalous C-5 road extension project.
