The Commission on Elections (Comelec) expressed confidence Friday that there will be no more legal obstacle to the success of the full automation of the May 10, 2010 polls following last Thursday’s decision of the Supreme Court that laid to rest all questions of legality arising from the project.

The Comelec, led by Chairman Jose A.R Melo, hailed the decision saying it serves as a strong moral booster to those who believe that the current poll automation program will ensure honest and credible elections and at the same time restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Melo said all preparations for the next major political exercise are on target, particularly the printing of official ballots, the testing of Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines to be used in the elections, and the delivery of the machines has been proceeding smoothly.
Smartmatic-TIM had assured the Comelec that all the PCOS machines it is committed to deliver has been finished and their delivery will be completed shortly.

At the same time, Comelec added, the training of public school teachers who will serve as members of the board of election inspectors is set for next month, hand in hand with the information and education campaign on the new election system to be conducted all over the country, it was pointed out.

“Between now and election day, the Comelec expects to perfect the automated system and for majority of the Filipino voters to adopt to the new system,” Comelec official said.

The Comelec was joined in hailing the Supreme Court decision by several party-list groups, saying automation, if not properly handled, could be a disaster for the nation
