Hundreds of kilometers apart, the perceived frontrunners for the presidency in the May 2010 elections kept up their attacks on each other on Friday.

Sen. Manuel Villar Jr., the standard-bearer of the Nacionalista Party (NP), on Friday said that his strong push for the C-5 road extension project has helped make him more popular in vote-rich Cavite province, south of Manila.

“Of all the provinces in Southern Luzon, Cavite is the biggest beneficiary of C-5. Caviteños completely understand the project, that’s why they appreciate it,” he added.

During a campaign sortie Julugan barangay (village) in Tanza town, Villar said that if became president, he would also push for the completion of the Light Rail Transit 1 extension to the towns of Imus and Dasmariñas.

His audience chanted his name and that of his running mate, Sen. Loren Legarda, in a rally that was more lively than that in Calamba, Laguna province, on Wednesday.

NP senatorial candidate Gilbert Remulla, a former Cavite congressman, said that Caviteños love Villar and predicted that the party’s candidate would win “convincingly” in Cavite, which has the second-biggest number of registered voters in the country with 1.65 million registered voters, next only to Cebu.

The NP ticket also barnstormed in Silang, Kawit and Naic towns before capping their sortie with a rally in General Mariano Alvarez town.

Villar and Legarda were accompanied by senatorial candidates Miriam Defensor Santiago, Adel Tamano, Liza Maza, Satur Ocampo, Gwen Pimentel, Susan Ople, Ramon Mitra 3rd, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and a son of detained Marine Col. Ariel Querubin, also an NP senatorial bet.

In Iloilo province, also south of Manila, Villar was accused by the Liberal Party (LP) of illegal conversion of first-class irrigated ricelands for a subdivision project of his real-estate firm.

During a press conference, former Senate President Franklin Drilon said that the NP standard-bearer had a 586-linear-meter road built along Jibao-an in Pavia town that road would pass through Savannah Subdivision owned by Villar in Polo Maestra Vita in Oton town.

Drilon presented copies of tax declarations from farmer-beneficiaries showing that the 12.7 hectares of lands converted by Crown Communities Iloilo, also owned by Villar, were classified as first-class irrigated agricultural lands covered by the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) and therefore not subject to land conversion.

The Liberal Party with its frontrunners Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd and Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd and some of its Senate candidates—Risa Hontiveros, Ruffy Biazon, Teofisto Guinggona 3rd, Neric Acosta, Dr. Martin Bautista, Yasmin Busrao Lao and Danilo Lim, were in Iloilo province to campaign.

Seemingly staying above the apparent mudslinging between the Villar and Aquino camps, Team Gibo will barnstorm in Metro Manila today after taking on southern Philippines where Gilbert ‘Gibo” Teodoro met with students and the founder of Davao’s largest religious group, Pastor Apollo Quibuloy.

Teodoro, the standard-bearer of the ruling party Lakas-Kampi Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) and other administration candidates will be at Rizal Memorial Stadium to speak before with students of Fatima University who are taking part in their school’s sport festival.

From the stadium, he will proceed to SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City (Metro Manila) and mingle with shoppers there.

In Davao City, Teodoro met with Quiboloy, the founder of the reputedly six-million strong “Jesus Christ, the Name Above Every Name,” who prayed for Teodoro’s success in the May 10 elections.

He thanked the pastor for his concern and advice, saying that Quiboloy’s prayer would be a big boost to his campaign.
