SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines – Administration presidential candidate Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro and his team made their presence felt by campaigning in rebel-infested areas here.

Teodoro, along with vice presidential candidate Edu Manzano, led the entourage in defying threats by the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in areas where just a few weeks ago 11 government troops were killed in an ambush staged by the rebel group.

The troops were waylaid when they were trying to prevent the NPA from implementing their permit to campaign on local candidates.

At the rally Teodoro said he would prioritize development programs for local government units if elected president.

He promised his leadership would determine the concerns of every community to effectively address their particular needs.

“The leader should be capable of understanding the needs of communities to effectively address their respective problems and then give the best solutions,” Teodoro said.

Among the local leaders that attended the rally were Deputy Speaker Amelita Villarosa; her husband, former governor Jose Villarosa; Mayor Voltaire Villarosa of Mamburao; Vice Mayor Nestor Perez of Rizal; and mayoralty bets Renato Paulino for Calintaan and Eleonor Fajardo for Magsaysay town.

Among the Lakas-Kampi-CMD senatorial bets who campaigned were former justice secretary Silvestre Bello, lawyer Raul Lambino, broadcaster Rey Langit, reelectionist Senators Ramon Revilla Jr. and Lito Lapid, and Binalonan, Pangasinan Mayor Ramon Guico.

Manzano, for his part, revealed they are shifting gears to cover more areas in their campaign sorties.

Manzano said they would campaign more aggressively on March 26 at the start of the campaign period for local candidates.

He said Teodoro is campaigning separately to cover other areas along with some of the party’s senatorial candidates.

Manzano said he would also campaign separately and bring along their other senatorial candidates.

According to Manzano, they are campaigning by teams for four days and together for three consecutive days.

He said they are happy with the way the campaign has been going and the positive feedback from the people.

Manzano maintained they have no problem with the issue of campaign funds.

Manzano said the arrangement would be for Lakas to provide the campaign materials, transportation and the support staff for the campaign.

Manzano said their role is to articulate their programs and platforms before the people during the campaign.

“We have to get the people to listen to us and we feel that if we interact with them, we are assured that we could secure the vote.”

Manzano, along with Lambino, made a mall tour in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, taking the opportunity to talk with weekend shoppers. – With Cesar Ramirez, Eva Visperas
