ADMINISTRATION presidential candidate Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. yesterday rejected proposals to conduct loyalty check among the members of the Lakas-Kampi-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) after some of his supposed allies defected to the rival Nacionalista Party (NP) of Sen. Manny Villar.

Teodoro, the standard-bearer of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD who was backed by 51 governors, said “the party will not conduct a loyalty check but the party will take appropriate measures (sanctions)” after Bukidnon Gov. Jose Maria “Joe” Zubiri, a provincial chairman of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD, declared support for Villar.

On Wednesday, former Cebu City Mayor Alvin Garcia, cousin of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, announced that his party, Kugi Uswag Sugbo (Progress for Cebu) or Kusog, had formed an alliance with Villar’s party.

Last Monday, Zubiri and 20 municipal and two city mayors declared support for Villar during the 12th charter day celebration of Malaybalay City.

Teodoro, a former secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND), admitted that there are other members of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD who might follow Zubiri but stressed that they are prepared for it.

“Mayroon din namang (aalis) siyempre, I won’t mention them but we are ready,” said Teodoro, stressing that 70 percent of the incumbent government officials remain as members of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

But he expressed confidence that the Lakas-Kampi-CMD could attract other candidates to join them. “Tantiya natin may mawawala, may madadagdag, alam niyo na, very fluid ang election. Pero aasukihin namin ang local campaign.”

He added that defection during the campaign season cannot be prevented in the country’s political setting.

“You can’t stop people from defecting, but you can cleanse the party for the future,” said Teodoro.

At six in the evening yesterday, Teodoro was scheduled to attend a rally in Cebu City organized by Gov. Garcia TO start of the local campaign.

During yesterday morning, he was scheduled to attend a rally in his home province in Tarlac and unveil the “green loop,” composed of 40,000 supporters who formed a human chain starting at the Lakas-Kampi-CMD headquarters along Connecticut Street near EDSA up to different parts of Metro Manila
