MANILA, Philippines - Supporters of Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro Jr. launched yesterday a new movement for a people-based network to generate votes for their candidate.

Lead convenor Eli Quinto said the Gibo Multipliers Movement was formed to consolidate, coordinate and multiply individuals and groups supporting Teodoro.

“At the heart of the (movement) is the idea that a single person or group is connected to others who, in turn, have their own respective connections,” he said.

Speaking at the movement’s launch at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City, Quinto said they aim to increase the number of supporters to ensure his victory in the May 10 elections.

“When you add them all up, the reach of that one person or group would be much larger,” he said.

Quinto said although a person or group can only do so much, they can become multipliers by reaching out to other people they know.

“It’s all just a matter of bringing these people together so that they realize there are more who believe in the candidate they want to support, which is Secretary Teodoro,” he said.

Quinto said the movement’s successful launch, which Teodoro and his vice-presidential running mate Edu Manzano and other members of their ticket graced, shows that support for him goes far and deep in the hearts and minds of Filipinos.

“It is our belief that Secretary Gibo should be the one to lead the Philippines,” he said.

“He is the one with the necessary skills, talents and intelligence to bring our country and people forward to genuine progress.”

Participating individuals and groups highlighted the launch by leaving their thumbprints on a massive backdrop expressing the movement’s support for Teodoro.

More than a hundred vehicles took part in a motorcade in major cities in Metro Manila.

The motorcade ended with a closing ceremony at the Film Center in the Cultural Center of the Philippines complex in Pasay City.

Teodoro, Manzano shun debates

Teodoro and Manzano are shunning debates to focus on solidifying political support at the grassroots level.

Speaking at the launching of the Gibo Multiplier Movement yesterday, Teodoro said he will only attend one more debate prior to the May 10 presidential elections.

“The medical forum (of the Philippine College of Physicians) was my last,” he said. “But I will attend a debate prior to the election proper.”

Manzano said he is shunning debates because he doesn’t want to be involved in political and personal mudslinging.

He said he would rather spend time campaigning with the people in far-flung communities rather than engage in mudslinging, Manzano said.

Teodoro said he and his partymates are not interested in survey results borne out of these debates and would rather be with their supporters on the local level, and support them the way they have been supporting him.

Debate organizers, especially those on television, appear to be throwing their weight around, Teodoro said.

Manzano said the organizer of the debate among vice presidential candidates last Sunday had “no respect whatsoever” for prior commitments of other people.

“They’re hitting me because they want me to appear on short notice,” he said. “How about my prior provincial campaign commitments?” – Michael Punongbayan, Jaime Laude
