ADMINISTRATION presidential candidate Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro yesterday said the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) and the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPB) should be allowed to review the petitions for a P75 across-the-board daily wage increase for workers in Metro Manila.
Teodoro, the standard-bearer of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, said he is leaving to wage board the fate of the request of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) before the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for the wage increase.
“The tripartite system should work, the wage board should be allowed to work and their decisions. I want to make the system works, that’s up to the regional wage boards,” Teodoro told reporters in his campaign sortie at Caloocan City Tuesday night.
Sought for comment, broadcaster Rey Langit and Atty. Raul Lambino, borth senatorial candidates of Lakas-Kampi-CMD who accompanied Teodoro on their campaign sorties in Malabon and Caloocan Cities, backed wage increase to workers but underscored the need for an extensive consultation with employers to ensure that it can withstand the amount of increase.
“I am supportive of anything that is beneficial to our workers. Kinakailangan lamang na huwag tayong padalos-dalos. Kailangang magkaroon ng consultations with employers. Mas malaking problema kapag business ang nag-collapsed dahil hindi nagkaroon ng maayos na consultations, mas maraming workers ang maghihirap dahil mawawalan ng trabaho,” said Langit.
For his part, Lambino stressed that workers should be given the needed economic relief thru wage hike amid the continuous rise in prices of basic goods and services.
“Matagal ko ng sinasabi na hindi dapat iasa sa employers ang pagtatalaga ng kaukulang suweldo sa employers. Kinakailangang makialam po ang gobyerno. Kakayanin po ng ating entrepreneurs ang umento basta bawasan lamang nila ang kanilang tubo at tugunan ang kanilang social responsibility,” said Lambino.
It will be recalled that the determination of minimum wages by the regional boards began in 1989 with the passage of Republic Act (RA) No. 6727.
Prior to this, it was Congress that sets minimum wages. It enacted the last minimum wage law in 1989 which provided for a national daily minimum wage increase from P64 to P89.
In Metro Manila, the minimum wage was adjusted 16 times since 1989, the increases ranging from a low of P12 to a high of P26.50. The current daily minimum wage compensation in the National Capital Region is P382 after the increase of P20 per day was granted by the regional board on June 14, 2008.
