MANILA, Philippines—Senator Manny Villar’s fierce critic and rival in the presidential race believed his political advertisements would also reach a saturation point.
Senator Ma. Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal, an independent presidential candidate, said during a presidential forum in Makati City on Tuesday that Villar has the advantage of always being seen on television because of his money.
“If it’s Manny Villar’s face you want to see, then of course he has the advantage of being seen…,” said Madrigal.
“But I pray to God that that works to his disadvantage because sometimes there’s a saturation level. I’m sure the ads experts will know,” she said.
Madrigal said that even before the official campaign period began last February 9, Villar had already spent P2 billion in political advertisements.
This was the reason, she said , why she opposed allowing any candidate to spend in ads even before the campaign period.
In the same forum, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, expressed his openness to the idea of “having the state take care of a portion” of the campaign expenses of a candidate who will win in the presidential race.
Aquino said the figures that were reportedly being spent by some candidates were “exorbitant.”
JC delos Reyes, another presidential aspirant, said a candidate spending P2 billion was already buying the elections.
“It’s an affront to the people,” delos Reyes said, “And if we will allow this to happen, then it might as well be a popularity contest.”
