ILOILO CITY—It was hard to gauge how administration standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro truly felt about a Supreme Court ruling that declared that appointed officials running in the May 10 elections were deemed resigned when they filed their certificates of candidacy.
During a tour of Iloilo City on Tuesday, Teodoro said appointed officials must heed the Supreme Court ruling.
“The Supreme Court has ruled and (this) should be followed,” Teodoro told reporters during the launching of a volunteers’ center for his candidacy in Jaro district in Iloilo.
But during a birthday party for Edgardo Pamintuan, Subic-Clark Alliance Development Council chair, in Angeles City late Tuesday, Teodoro said, “I will not advise them to resign.”
“It’s up to them how they will apply the [SC] decision. I cannot teach them what their vision should be and I do not need to advise them because they, too, are intelligent,” he said.
Pamintuan, a presidential appointee who is running for Angeles City mayor, said: “I think we should all follow what the SC likes us to do. I am automatically resigned unless the administration files for a motion for reconsideration.”
Teodoro resigned as defense secretary before he filed his candidacy last year.
Addressing Iloilo reporters, the Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential candidate said: “If you’re running for elections and leading a line department (at the same time), one will eventually suffer, either your work or your campaign.”
“Let’s not wait for its legality to be decided. Let’s do what is good for everybody (because) the elections are near,” he added.
Teodoro spoke at an Iloilo forum attended by 1,000 students and teachers of the Central Philippine University (CPU). He fended off questions about his association with outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, saying, “If I a wanted to be a puppet, I shouldn’t have run. That would be shameful for my family.”
He also said it was not the function of a president to prosecute former officials for alleged crimes.
“(If elected,) I’m not the person to do that, there are bodies to do that. I’m not going to look backward but to look forward,” he said.
Teodoro also made whistle stops at the towns of Zarraga, Leganes and Pototan and Passi City, where he attended the birthday celebration of administration ally and former mayor, Jesry Palmares.
Administration officials and supporters accompanied Teodoro during his sortie. Among them were House Majority Floor Leader Arthur Defensor, Iloilo City Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr. and Governors Felipe Nava (Guimaras) and Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez (Antique).
Teodoro flew to Angeles City at dusk to attend Pamintuan’s birthday party.
He intentionally omitted the letter ‘H,’ a common speech weakness of Kapampangans, when he addressed Pamintuan over the microphone.
“I will greet you in Kapampangan. ‘Appy birthday, Pareng Ed,” Teodoro said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
