Antonio Trillanes IV, which tried to oust President Arroyo in 2003, has thrown its support behind the presidential candidacy of Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar of the Nacionalista Party (NP).
The decision by the group, which has 400 national and local chapters with more than 50,000 members, to support the candidacy of Villar was announced on Wednesday by discharged Air Force lieutenant Ashley Acedillo, the group’s spokesman.
Acedillo said that aside from Villar, the Magdalo Group also endorsed the candidacies of Sen. Mar Roxas II for vice president and Ariel Querubin, Pia Cayetano, Jinggoy Estrada, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Toots Ople, Gilbert Remulla, Adel Tamano, Danilo Lim, Ruffy Biazon, Vicente Sotto, JV Bautista and Joey de Venecia for senator.
He said their endorsement of Villar went with several conditions, including that Villar will not enter into an alliance with President Arrroyo.
The NP presidential bet should also push for the advocacies of the Magdalo and reform and modernize the Armed Forces.
In addition, the Magdalo, under its new chairman, Trillanes, will be allowed to freely serve the
government.
“Senator Villar agreed to all of the conditions,” Acedillo said.
Acedillo clarified that their endorsements of Villar and Roxas automatically meant that they are declaring war against Villar opponents, like former President Joseph Estrada and Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, and vice-presidential candidates Sen. Loren Legarda and Mayor Jejomar Binay of Makati.
Meanwhile, detained senatorial candidate Danilo Lim said he respected Villar’s endorsement by the junior officers, although he said it runs counter to his position.
“I have always insisted on doing the right thing. One of these is to defend the right to choose. I respect the Magdalo’s right to choose a candidate different from my own choice. I have always felt an affinity for my brothers in arms. It is this affinity and our common purpose and principles that led us to Manila Peninsula on November 29, 2007.”
“I am grateful that they have endorsed my candidacy and have pledged to continue to do so. However, their support for Sen. Manny Villar’s candidacy runs counter to my present situation, having been adopted and supported by another party,” he said.
Lim, former commander of the Army Scout Ranger, is running as an independent, although he has been adopted as a guest candidate by the Liberal Party and the Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino
