Teodoro: I have a good chance of cornering Ilocano votes

by Lira Dalangin-Fernandez (INQUIRER.net)

SAN FERNANDO, La Union – Administration candidate Gilbert Teodoro believes he has a “very good chance” of cornering the Ilocano vote, but acknowledges that he has to work hard for it.

Arriving at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University here late Friday afternoon for a campus visit, Teodoro was mobbed by students and teachers as he sauntered to the gym. And most of the people in the crowd stayed even if the only form of entertainment came from the banter of Governor Manuel Ortega, who also belted out two songs dedicated to the presidential bet.

Teodoro knew he was in one of his bailiwicks.

“I have a very good chance in La Union. In all Ilocano areas, we have very, very good chance,” he said when asked about his chances in an interview after the event.

Asked if he believes there is an Ilocano vote, he said, “I think so,” but added that he has to work hard for it to ensure that gets the people’s votes.

Teodoro, who hails from the first district of Tarlac province, spoke fluent Ilocano before the crowd.

Youth vote

He stressed the importance of the youth vote, saying that the youth are more mature these days. He also said that the voters should not squander the opportunity to elect the right leaders and change the system through this coming May election.

“What we have to change is the acrimony in the system,” he told reporters in an interview when asked if he was running because he was already tired of the system.

Teodoro earlier vowed to carry out a positive campaign and shun mudslinging common among candidates during elections.

He reiterated he would not be affected by his low ratings in the survey and focus on campaigning directly especially to the crowd where he is well-received and in his bailiwicks, especially in the Visayas region and in the provinces in the north.

“I think we have to concentrate on what we are doing and not be distracted by surveys or the spin put on them,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Teodoro visited Laoag City and Ilocos Norte. He will go around the plaza here Saturday before proceeding to Candon in Ilocos Sur to act as sponsor in a wedding together with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Asked if he was affected by endorsements made by several priests and rightist military officers on some of his rivals, he said, “Anybody who can endorse any group with credibility is fine, but it all depends on how you engage them or what their expectations are.”
