Inocentes to 'BF': Place posters in designated areas

by ELLSON A. QUISMORIO (Manila Bulletin)
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Oscar Inocentes on Saturday gave this personal message to vice presidential candidate Bayani Fernando: Place your campaign posters in the correct areas.

“Being a former chairman, he (Fernando) knows that there are rules to be implemented. Candidates should be good examples for their followers to emulate,” Inocentes said.

As the official campaign period for national candidates has started, the MMDA chief reminded them not make a mess out of their campaign paraphernalia. “We will tear down all campaign posters irrespective of political parties or affiliations,” he said.
Inocentes specifically asked his predecessor Fernando, urging him to “police his own people and educate them as to the designated poster areas,” he said.

Inocentes noted that candidates’ posters are destroying the visual landscape of Metro Manila and are violating the provisions of the fair elections act regarding common poster areas.

The MMDA head warned candidates as well as their respective political parties that appropriate charges will be filed against them if they fail to follow the rules governing campaign advertisements.

The MMDA is awaiting a resolution from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) deputizing it as the lead agency in clearing illegal posters. A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the MMDA and Comelec is expected to be signed at the next Metro Manila Council meeting on February 18.

The MMDA’s Roadway/Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group personnel have so far cleared portions of EDSA, Taft Avenue, Monumento, Quezon Avenue, and Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard of illegal posters
