MANILA, Philippines—Sen. Manuel Villar expressed serious doubt that the Comelec can undertake automated elections.
Villar, Nacionalista Party standard-bearer, called on Comelec Chair Jose Melo to be straightforward this early and resort to partial automation, or revert to manual elections if need be.
“I’m nervous about this,” Villar said at a press conference at Hotel del Rio in Iloilo City before the start of a daylong motorcade that would include the towns of Barotac Nuevo and Jaro.
He said he was not confident about the automated elections. “I hope we pull this off, but it’s not easy to experiment with our democracy,” he said.
Asked if he would recommend this late the scrapping of the whole automation process, Villar said: “It’s not all or nothing. It can be partial. It can be substantial automation.”
Villar was also worried that losers in a computerized balloting might not be able to accept defeat. Michael Lim Ubac
